Film about the psychological development of an American woman and about the harsh political situation in Burma. Laura Bowman, an American doctor, travels to the Far East to escape from the memories of the violent murder of her husband and young son. Neither the beautiful landscape, nor the friendly nature of the native people however have a positive effect on Laura's depression and emotional insensitivity. When she travels through Burma with her sister Andy, she sees the budding democratic impulses and the harsh repression of the military junta. When she leaves her hotel late at night - long after the curfew imposed by the government - she witnesses a student protest led by pacifist Aung San Suu Kyi, the symbol of peaceful opposition to the totalitarian regime.
