It is 1963. The village Xime is in the grip of optimism, because an abundant rice harvest is expected. Yet the widower Iala, father of Raul and Bedan, is worried. The colonial authorities are looking for Raul, who is studying to be a priest in Bissau. Bedan, the youngest son, challenges authority, teases everything and everyone and falls in love his father's fiancée. These are difficult times for his father Iala.
