Beautifully shot in Tijuana, on the notorious border between Mexico and the United States. The widow Serena arrives with her three children. The family has got into difficulties since the death of the father and has problems adapting to the new life in the border town. The young Jane has also arrived in Tijuana from the United States, visiting her brother Frank who is doing research here into the language of whales. Jane's main quest in Tijuana is for more meaning in her life. Tijuana is in a border town in many senses. There is an iron wall almost 25 kilometres long, but the many languages spoken there also make it clear that those in Tijuana are on the border: the characters are united by Spanglish, but the language also drives them apart.
