investigates the theme of human indifference. It is the story of a severely-ill man, professor Simek, who is lying in hospital after a complex heart operation; he doesn't want to live any more. He has settled up on all sides. With his loves, his scientific career, his family ties. His daughter has broken with him after he was subjected to a political trial in which he was wrongly charged with undermining the state. Nothing has any point for him. Simek regards the hospital as his final destination in life. He refuses to get better and spits out his medicine. The doctors however bend over backwards to get him better because the man is a valuable scientist for the country. An apparently unimportant event wakes him one last time. From his window he sees a girl releasing pigeons from a roof every day. One day he looks outside in vain. Simek is worried about her. No one in the hospital wants to help him because they think he is having delusions. With a supreme effort, he escapes from the hospital and goes looking for the house where he hopes the girl lives. His worries are justified.
