Twenty-year-old Muriel is not what you could call a beauty queen, nor does she have much talent and the seaside resort Porpoise Spit where she has grown up doesn't earn a prize for charm either. Muriel's greatest dream is to get married double quick and escape her birthplace, the peak of boredom; she sees no other way to free herself from her boring girlfriends and her interfering father. When she fails to find a husband in Porpoise Spit, she makes the move to Sydney. has a beautiful leading rôle by Toni Colette as Muriel and is blessed with a brilliant scenario. The film is a satire on Australian middle-class values; under the surface of the comedy, wallowing in tasteless seventies décors, is a grim critique of class society and the hell of family life.
