Peter Jackson acquired 18-carat cult status with his splatter films such as Braindead, screened in Rotterdam. He takes a different tack with , that the maker says can be summarised in three words: innocence, imagination and obsession. The opening scene promises the orgies of blood and violence we expect from him, but it soon becomes clear that his perverse pleasure has taken on more subtle forms. Jackson based on a true event from the fifties, when Australian society was stunned by two schoolgirls who murdered one of their mothers. Jackson submerged himself in the girls’ fantasy world, described in their diaries and brought to life with virtuoso screen techniques – he literally follows the girls in their imaginary world, the Fourth World.
