is a beautiful example of filmic treasures from the past that can be reconstructed as new thanks to recently-developed restoration techniques. The film is being screened in a fine monochrome coloured print that was made with the assistance of the Lumière Project, part of the European Media Programme. The film was restored by the Netherlands Film Museum in cooperation with the Film Museum of Munich. Unjustly, by Viertel does not have the same well-known sound as the films of Fritz Lang and Friedrich-Wilhelm Murnau, dating from the same period. is among the most beautiful films from the era of German Expressionism and thanks to the recent conservation, everyone can now get to know it. The film tells a humorous, dramatic and fanciful story. The protagonist Querulin is a poor office clerk who is suffering from his poverty and his baldness. At the end of his tether, he buys a wig that once belonged to a monarch. When he puts the wig on, Querulin changes into the monarch who had mysteriously disappeared five years earlier. He returns to his palace and discovers his wife is having an affair with another man. He realises his wife no longer loves him, sends the couple away from the palace and dies. The film is a Kammerspiel in the best possible sense. The acting is stylish and the film is recorded with a moving camera. During the screening in Rotterdam the film will be accompanied by live piano music.
