A love affair set in a divided city against the background of a threatening civil war; the location of Kosh ba kosh is Duzhanbe, the capital of Tadjikistan. The protagonistsare Daler, a street boy who moves through the chaotic city like a fish in water, and Mira, a young Russian girl visiting her father. The father has trouble maintaining his position in a city which is increasingly hostile to Russians. When Mira arrives, her father has just run up a gambling debt. The other players have little sympathy and want their winnings at any price. All that the father has to offer is his daughter. Daler, also one of the group, kidnaps Mira out of the hands of the winner, a questionable old man. He takes care of the beautiful young westernised Russian girl (played by the Spanish Paulina Galvez) who feels threatened from all sides in the out-of-control Central Asian metropolis. He takes her to the cable car he runs with friends and that brings the strangest - usually illegal - things from the hills down into town. Daler prepares a romantic meal in the cabin and lures Mira in his love nest between heaven and earth.Khudoynazarov has structured Kosh ba kosh in a fragmentary way and improvisation is used at times throughout the film. The authentic locations are visible and tangible giving Kosh ba kosh the realism of a documentary.
