Comic vampire film with cult potential. The horror genre is parodied in an original and humorous way in surroundings verging on kitsch. Kuzui himself calls Buffy, The Vampire Slayer 'an action film without blood, drugs and rifles'.Protagonist Buffy (Kristy Swanson) is an attractive girl and (hence) a popular cheer-leader at school. She is destined to fight the vampires. At first however she doesn't want to know about her vocation. Only when Merrick (Donald Sutherland)points out her special task to her, is Buffy convinced. And then she tackles her duty with verve. She will have to fight a vampire that has been brought to life and is considerably less one-dimensional that we are used to in the traditional horror film. Alongside demonic traits, he also has humour and charm. For the action scenes, film-maker Fran Rubel Kuzui allowed herself to be inspired by Chinese martial-arts films. The personification of ultimate evil with whom Buffy battles is played by the Dutch expert on devilish roles Rutger Hauer.
