An idiosyncratic film shot in black & white which drew large audiences at the festivals in Park City (Sundance) and Venice. This comedy is about making a very independent film. Aldolpho Rollo would love to be a film-maker and has written a monumental screenplay. It looks as if money problems will make him give up his dream; he can't pay the rent and decides to put his life work up for sale in a small ad. The incredible happens: a certain Joe buys the script and even wants Aldolpho to film it. This Joe, a gangster, has his own ways of getting finance and he leads Aldolpho into criminal ways. They somehow manage to scrape some capital together and the artist and the gangster start acquiring more and more respect for each other. Joe even helps the clumsy and shy Aldolpho to court his neighbour, the beautiful and independent Angelica.Alexandre Rockwell more or less based the story on an event which he had encountered. When he had completely run out of money while shooting his film Lenz, he offered his saxophone for sale. A certain Frank, a petty gangster, was interested and took an interest in the film too. Frank paid the remaining sum which Rockwell needed for his film and became his 'producer'.The role of Aldolpho is played by Steve Buscemi, the rising star of independent American cinema. In Rotterdam Buscemi can also be seen in his own What Happened to Pete and as gangster in Reservoir Dogs by Quinten Tarantino.
