'I have nothing. I want nothing. I am free.' That is the philosophy of the characters in Beggars and Noblemen. Officer Nour El Din is searching for the culprit of a crime committed in a brothel; he finds a group of drop-outs who change his life. Gohar is a professor at the university who goes to live with the group on the day when he realises that all the things he tells his students are really only lies. According to the ex-clerk Kordi all one needs is a slice of bread and a piece of hash; in his revolutionary dreams he avenges himself on an unjust society. Yeghen is a would-be poet and drugs dealer.Beggars and Noblemen is set in Old Cairo during the last days of the Second World War. Its maker, Asma El Bakri, says she wanted to show 'supreme wisdom' with this film.
