Based on the popular Brazilian novel by João Guimarães Rosa, Mutum explores the vulnerable way in which children perceive the adult world.
Life is hard for a large family living on a remote farm – especially for Thiago, a sensitive boy and the eldest of five children. His parents’ marriage is strained, his uncle is sent away from the farm and his dreamy nature seems to get on his father’s nerves.
Trying to make sense of the adult world around them, Thiago and his younger brother Felipe invent their own stories. At night, they lie in bed talking about God and their shared fear of sin – though what exactly counts as a sin remains unclear to them. Thiago does his very best to ‘be good’, but the contradictory signals from his surroundings make him increasingly anxious.
Sandra Kogut’s directorial debut impresses with its camerawork and the stunningly natural performances by the children. Kogut travelled to remote parts of Brazil, selecting local children to take part. A project that began as a workshop and study of rural life, eventually developed into a feature film.
