Alice’s House

Manicurist Alice spends her days in a modest beauty salon in São Paulo, where gossip tinged with erotic undertones forms the backdrop for the quasi-intimate exchange of personal details between clients and colleagues. Her husband earns a modest living as a taxi driver elsewhere in the city. At home, Alice’s mother manages the chaotic household of the two working parents and their three older, constantly fighting sons.

What begins as a seemingly ordinary family life soon unfolds into an intense drama when Alice discovers her husband is having an affair. At first, she turns a blind eye, but when a former childhood sweetheart reappears, Alice too allows herself to give in to temptation.

In his feature film debut, documentary filmmaker Teixeira brings an intensity and focus on social themes that also characterises his non-fiction work. He doesn’t pass judgement, instead allowing the often-repressed tensions to build through calm yet razor-sharp scenes, marked by naturalistic performances. With subtle, precisely framed details, the camera situates the characters within the broader fabric of Brazilian society, where countless parallel stories quietly play out.
