Volunteer Coordinator

International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) presents a leading film festival and year-round programme. We support new and adventurous filmmaking talent, also beyond the screening room, through initiatives such as CineMart, the Hubert Bals Fund, Rotterdam Lab and other industry activities.

In January each year, we bring together emerging and established filmmakers and artists from around the world to showcase a visionary programme of independent films, talks, exhibitions, performances, installations, immersive media and more. IFFR attracts over 300,000 visits to screenings and events annually. We also organise a range of film-related activities throughout the year, with our Filmclub and other collaborations with Rotterdam-based partners.

None of this would be possible without our team of more than 600 volunteers. They are at the heart of the festival, taking on roles such as audience assistants, merchandise assistants, production runners and assistant location managers.

To help coordinate this incredible team, we’re looking for a second Volunteer Coordinator to join us from October. Working alongside our returning coordinator, Sharon, you’ll take the lead on volunteer coordination for the 56th edition of IFFR, with the possibility of continuing in the position for future editions.

About the role

As Volunteer Coordinator, you’ll be involved in every aspect of volunteer management, from recruitment and scheduling to on-site support and post-festival evaluation. By the end of the festival, you’ll know IFFR inside out.

  • Key responsibilities

    • Lead the recruitment, selection and onboarding of all festival volunteers.
    • Work closely with departments across the organisation to understand their volunteer requirements, while advising them on what’s possible and managing expectations.
    • Develop the volunteer rota and assign shifts based on volunteer availability and departmental needs.
    • Act as the main point of contact for volunteers throughout their festival journey, ensuring they have all the information they need.
    • Organise volunteer accreditation and distribute festival badges and volunteer shirts.
    • Coordinate social events for volunteers and ensure volunteer hubs are well stocked with food and refreshments.
    • Evaluate the volunteer programme after the festival together with your fellow coordinator and volunteers, and gather feedback for future editions.
  • Who are you?

Our volunteers are a warm, committed and welcoming community, and we’re looking for someone who shares those values.

    • You enjoy bringing people together, motivating others and creating a positive atmosphere.
    • You’re a team player who thrives on working with colleagues across the organisation, from the year-round IFFR team to the festival crew and hundreds of volunteers.

This role also requires confidence and consistency. Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds, with different motivations and expectations. A key part of your role is managing those expectations by communicating clearly, setting boundaries where needed, and addressing issues in a constructive and timely way.

    You’ll also have:

    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
    • A genuine enjoyment of working with a diverse group of people.
    • The confidence to set clear boundaries in a respectful and professional way.
    • Strong organisational skills and the ability to keep track of multiple priorities.
    • A calm approach under pressure and the judgement to know when to ask for support.
    • Excellent written and spoken English, with the ability to brief, support and communicate professionally.

You’re available from October 2026 until the end of February 2027. The role begins at approximately three days per week, increasing to full-time (five days per week) as the festival approaches.

  • What do we offer?

    • A dynamic and international working environment.
    • The opportunity to work alongside an experienced coordinator with in-depth knowledge of the volunteer programme.
    • A meaningful coordinating role at one of Europe’s leading film festivals.
    • A gross monthly salary of €3,273 to €3,756 (full-time), in line with Scale 7 of the Ketentafel Filmfestivals.
    • English is the working language within the organisation.
