Competitiveness is the word of the day among European Union (EU) policymakers, and its influence is beginning to trickle down into media and film policies and programmes. Primary data – gathered through international surveys and interviews with European and non-European film professionals – for REBOOT, a Horizon Europe project (2023–2026), reveals that the traditional market-centric perspective on film competitiveness is limited.
This panel explores how film professionals can support an expanded understanding of competitiveness, emphasising cultural diversity and artistic experimentation. To foster mutual understanding between film professionals both inside and outside of Europe, it’s crucial to see how European films are viewed outside the EU and explore ways that the European industry can build more sustainable global film ecosystems.
