In January 1997 the first extensive fully illustrated monography on Jeffrey Shaw’s works was published by CAntz Verlag (Ostfildern) with texts by Anneaarie Duguet, Heinrich Klotz and Peter Weibel. The subtitle ofthis book is ‘From Expanded Cinema to the Virtual Reality’. Taking this as the subject of his presentation at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, Shaw will discuss the course of his work from expanded cinema eventstructures in the late 1960’s, via mixed media evnts and installations to his prominent interactive compueter graphic installations of the 80’s and 90’s. Underlying this creative process, Shaw will show that the modalities of virtuality and interactivity in his work, as well as certain technical strategies inhis methods of visualisation, are both a reflection and radical extension of the cinematic discourse.
