Short film at IFFR 2019
18 December 2018
Discover 250 short films across the festival’s four sections.
Did you know that IFFR has one of the largest short film programmes of its kind in Europe? At least 250(!) short films can be discovered throughout the festival’s four sections, a selection that sees filmmakers and artists play with a whole range of cinematic forms and ideas.
Ammodo Tiger Short Competition
This competition features each year as part of the festival’s Bright Future section. Around 20 to 25 short films compete for three equal Ammodo Tiger Short Awards. Here the festival also picks one film to be shortlisted for the short film category of the annual European Film Awards (EFA).
Bright Future Short
Outside the competition, Bright Future features a rich collection of innovative and experimental short films, by filmmakers and visual artists who can’t be pinpointed to existing genres or styles. Here you’ll find a curated compilation of programmes but also performances, installations and sometimes in conjunction with feature films.
Mid-length
Neither short nor long, mid-length films have a running time between 40 and 62 minutes. IFFR recognises mid-length as a vibrant format in cinema that is beginning to gather more and more attention. You’ll find many of these films focused in Bright Future Mid-length.
sound//vision
Our sound//vision programme features as part of Bright Future Short and is a late-night programme made up of four nights of live A/V performances in WORM Rotterdam. From 24 to 27 January, you can see, hear and experience collaborations between musicians, video artists, filmmakers and other artists working in the field of sound and vision.

Voices Short
Voices Short puts the spotlight on narrative-driven short films. Last year, we announced the Voices Short Award. Here it’s up to the audience to choose the winner of €2,500 and they do so with tearable voting cards after each screening.
Short films in Deep Focus
Every year you’ll discover many short films in Deep Focus: find them as part of Regained, short films by the ‘Acolytes’ in our Frameworks programme, and don’t miss the Deep Focus Short Profiles. Featuring at IFFR 2019 are the restored classics by Georgian-Armenian filmmaker Sergei Parajanov and two short profiles: from L.A.-based and London-born short-filmmaker Charlotte Pryce, and American interdisciplinary artist Cauleen Smith.
Short films in Perspectives
Each themed programme part of the Perspectives section will often be made up of its own collection of short films. This year find short films in: Say No More, Soul in the Eye, Rabbit Hole, Laboratory of Unseen Beauty, and The Spying Thing.
Short film marathon
Short films, short films, short films. Watch them back to back in our Short Film Marathon, a six-hour series featuring the festival’s highlights. We like push the boundaries with this programme, but don’t worry, there are breaks! Always on the last Saturday of the festival, this year you’ll find us at KINO 1.
Short film with Cineville
This year we’re teaming up with Cineville! With your Cineville pass you can get free access to the full short and mid-length programme. Show your Cinevillepas at the festival cash desk of the location where the film will be screened, one hour before it starts.
