Between 1994-96, Granular Synthesis focused on training their machine/system on two different human models: Modell 5 (subtitled MotionControl) and Modell X (subtitled Sweetheart) Their machine is primarily a device for isolating or dislocating a model’s appearance and behaviour from the cause and effect logic of cinema, television, video, music, and our perceptual experience of ‘full motion’ life itself. This effect is provoked through granulation, relentless repetition and the rolling, enveloping or cyclical recombination and layering and compression and with each of thousands of edit-points, high-frequency staccato image and sound perforation [...].
Nowadays, Modell 5 is made up of a 10 by 3.5 meters projection on which the face of the Japanese performance artist can be seen four times in a row. Like in a painting by Francis Bacon, the face of the artist is deformed and manipulated, only now in an electronic space that holds her alter ego captivated and subjected to the machine-based processing of a computer. The overpowering mechanic rhythms - supported by a lot of sub low - and the image processing evoke a feeling of schizophrenia, as if the body is being torn apart and merged with the electronic space. Modell 5 is an unparalleled visual, acoustic and bodily experience.
