In this portrait of the Austrian film director Michael Haneke, two former students at the film academy in Vienna – Nina Kusturica and Eva Testor – follow the director during his work and journeys to festivals. If you study at the Vienna Film Academy, you simply can’t avoid Haneke. His films are too emphatically present for that. So Kusturica and Testor wanted to get to know the man behind the films. Their film is a collection of conversations with the maker in the train, car and plane and provides a picture of the way he films and edits, but also shows how Haneke, who has mainly worked in France in recent years, communicates with his audience and with the media. Haneke: ‘I always say that film means 24 lies per second, serving the truth or serving the effort to discover the truth.’ The makers do not focus on the appearance of the obsessive Austrian film director, but on his art. Rightly so.
