This film has been hailed as 'the first film made by a Rom about the Roma'. It is set in a suburb north of Paris and reflects on the tensions that a 'settled' Gypsy has to face, living on the urban periphery. Nara's family life is desintegrating: he's chased his wife away as she doesn't want to have more kids with him, and he is also constantly quarrelling with his mother who obviously cannot get used to this life style. His attempts to make ends meet are compromised by France's ambient unemployment and racism. Les princes is a multi-layered film that both acknowledges changes in Romani culture, but also shows respect and celebrates the culture that seems to pass away.
