ZHANG Yimou (1950, China) is from a generation that was greatly influenced by the Cultural Revolution. He holds an Honorary doctorate from the Boston University. Zhang worked on films with Zhang Junchao and Chen Kaige before acquiring international recognition in his own right at the Berlin Film Festival (1988) with his debut feature Red Sorghum (1987). Zhang's lengthy cooperation with star actress Gong Li resulted in a series of films that are held to great esteem internationally. In 2012, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at both the Mumbai International Film Festival and the Cairo International Film Festival.
