Still: Is My Living In Vain

Video artist and filmmaker Ufuoma ESSI is based in South East London. Her practice focusses on the moving image, photography and sound. In her works, she uses archive forms to explore themes surrounding Black feminist epistemology, intersectionality and the configuration of displaced histories, drawing from a range of influences including Black popular culture, films, music, historical texts and Black feminist theory. Essi's films have travelled to international screens and institutions including Gasworks, Lisson Gallery, South London Gallery, Magasin, Centre National d'Art Contemporain (CNAC), Criterion Collection, Douglas Hyde Gallery, Galerie Rudolfinum, Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, Maysles Documentary Center, Black Star Film Festival and LUX. In 2024 she joins IFFR with her short film Is My Living in Vain (2023).
