IFFR Pro Dialogue: Preserving the preserved – film archives in perilous times

Event

IFFR 2023

An examination of the challenges faced by archivists and artists/filmmakers engaged in the practice of preservation, access and appropriation. Now more than ever, the threats posed by war, conflict and political instability, catastrophes (both natural and man-made), and institutional bureaucracy have created crises for moving image archives globally, as well as deepening the ongoing cultural debate regarding ownership and stewardship of audiovisual history.

The panel will consist of Yuki Aditya (director, The Myriad of Faces of the Future Challengers – Cinema Regained), Khavn De La Cruz (director, Nitrate: To the Ghosts of the 75 Lost Philippine Silent Films (1912-1933) and National Anarchist: Lino Brocka – Cinema Regained), Stanislav Bytiutskyi (representative of the Dovzhenko Film Centre and curator of the Kyiv Critics' Week), Massimo Benvegnù (professor of media law and ethics at Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia – Scuola Nazionale Cinema in Rome).

Moderated by producer and curator Madeleine Molyneaux.

Film still: National Anarchist: Lino Brocka dir. Khavn De La Cruz
