Young Szolt lives with his bed-ridden and alcoholic grandmother who dreams of her faded glory as an actress and constantly demands attention. Szolt bathes and dresses her every morning. A suddenly appearance is made in this cheerless existence by Juli, a pregnant gypsy girl. Szolt is shunned by his surroundings because he associates with her. Juli has a miscarriage and the two throw the dead baby in the Danube; others then call in the police. The film is very poetic and beautiful in a garish way. In little over an hour, Ildikó Szabo shapes a whole universe of hermetical relationships and powerful emotions. David Stratton in Variety: ‘As chilly as the wintry Danube but as bleakly beautiful, Child Murders is a poetic, affecting, quietly horrific picture.’
