The little brothers Evaristo and Luis Antonio (played by the brothers Evaristo and Luis Antonio) have just completed their last day at primary school. The brothers are Rarámuri Indians who live in the Sierra Tarahumara in Northwestern Mexico. At home they speak their own language, at school they are learning Spanish. Evaristo would like to go to secondary school, while Antonio (Tony) would rather stay at home and work on the ranch. One day, they are sent off to a remote village to take some medicine. Against their grandpa's will, they go on horseback, but the journey takes longer than they thought. After they set off, in a mountainous area they lose both the horse and each other. Tony goes looking for the horse and finds himself at a party, while the more serious Evaristo worriedly goes looking for the little village where he has to deliver the medicine. However without the horse neither boy can get home...
Cárdenas and Guzmán sketch a realistic portrait of the Rarámuri culture and everyday life in the Sierra Tarahumara, where time just seems to go a little more slowly than elsewhere. In addition, Cochochi is a subtle plea for the importance of cultural identity without being pedantic, while being a film for the whole family.
