Tsukamoto, the sublime poet of the post-human condition, manipulates the genre of the psychological thriller onto totally new levels of reality. In what is his tenth film, it comes down to two characters who can freely penetrate the nightmares of other people. The protagonist is Kagenuma, who has closed himself off from the world because of a childhood trauma caused by his mother. He is however unable to escape from his ability to witness the unfathomable fears of others. The other person with a disability is a mysterious figure, cursed with the urge to kill others and self.
When several mysterious suicides take place, a female detective (played by the Japanese pop idol Hitomi) becomes engrossed in the case. She finds out that the dead people had their last contact with someone whose name can only be seen on the mobile phone as ‘0’. Together with her colleagues Sekiya and Wakamiya she carefully pursues the investigation. When she finds out that the key to the mystery is in the dreams of the victims, she comes into contact with the ‘Nightmare Detective’. But to penetrate someone’s dreams is not without personal danger...
Tsukamoto: ‘While our heroine becomes engrossed in the hunt for the murderer, she unintentionally discovers the hollow space that has grown within her. And within this is the sublimation of existence that we somehow forget in our big city life.’ (GT)
