Sixty-year-old Donald Sullivan, better known as Sully (a beautiful part by Paul Newman), is an incorrigible optimist. He is convinced that everything will be better - but basically only because it couldn't get any worse. He doesn't have a steady job, a steady girlfriend nor any money. For years he was able to earn his living in the building industry, but since he injured his knee in an accident at work, he is on bad terms with his boss, Carl Roebuck, who refuses to pay him a cent sickness benefit. However Sully is 'nobody's fool' and has other ways of settling up. He could not fail to notice that Roebuck neglects his wife. At least once in his life something has to go right.
