invested a lot of time and patience in observing at length several Viennese people who live on the banks of the Danube. For instance Josef Fuchs, who is almost ninety. He speaks a dialect that few inhabitants of Vienna can understand and is still caretaker of the cemetery for the nameless. These are the nameless ones that drift by, that (angeschwemmt). Some drowned by accident, but most took their own lives. They have often been fished out of the river by Fuchs himself. Despite his lengthy experience as attendant to the nameless dead, he has never been able to understand their choice for death. Geyrhalter moves on along the river with his patient camera and meets other nice, strange, sad or wise people. A film as calm and slow as the Danube itself.
