Roland Verhavert was born in 1927 in Melsele-Waas. He studied first at the Higher Merchant School in Antwerp and was a bookkeeper for fourteen years before becoming film critic in 1946. Until 1960 he wrote his reviews for three different magazines. He presented the Belgian television programme Première for eight years. Since then, Verhavert has taught at the Hoger Rijksinstituut voor Toneel- en Kultuurspreiding in Brussels.
