Ringo Lam

Still: Septet: The Story of Hong Kong
Ringo LAM (1955-2018, Hong Kong) started as an actor in action films before the director's chair attracted him. He moved to Canada to study film at York University, Toronto. Lam directed many films throughout his career, working frequently with famous action stars Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chow Yun-fat. He is notable for his crime thrillers that share a bleak view of Hong Kong society. His film City on Fire (1987) was the inspiration for the plot and several scenes in Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs (1992). Lang always believed that real action and stunts and the feeling of genuine danger – as opposed to the CGI technology of Hollywood – were always the strength of Hong Kong films. In 2015, three years before his death, Lam received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the New York Asian Film Festival.
