Rotterdamse Vrijheidsmaaltijden x IFFR

Event

Year round 2024

Marking the annual commemoration of Liberation Day on 5 May, Vrijheidsmaaltijden, or Freedom Meals, are organised across the Netherlands to spark conversations around freedom and liberty between neighbours, friends, families and strangers. Sharing a meal together, new faces listen to each other's stories and get to know one another.

This year, IFFR collaborates with Rotterdamse Vrijheidsmaaltijden to bring a gripping film to the table. Join us for a bowl of Freedom Soup served in the Pauluskerk, followed by a screening of the IFFR 2024 film Hammarskjöld in Pathé Schouwburgplein: a biopic on the former Secretary General of the United Nations as he attempts to broker peace in the Congo in 1961.

The event is free with a ticket – come along to share a meal, film and a chat with your fellow Rotterdammers.

About Rotterdamse Vrijheidsmaaltijden
“We believe that we can only live in a truly free Rotterdam if everyone feels at home and safe. We believe that this starts with getting to know each other (better).” Formed in 2020, Rotterdamse Vrijheidsmaaltijden now has an extensive team of enthusiastic young Rotterdammers committed to organising hundreds of Freedom Meals in Rotterdam, so that during the nationwide celebration of Liberation Day on May 5 you can join a meal, with music, art and a connecting conversation.

About the film
While Secretary General of the United Nations, Dag Hammarskjöld made extraordinary progress in defusing global conflicts and combating colonialism – winning him many enemies. Per Fly’s gripping biopic delves into complex political machinations and the private world of this visionary statesman.
