Islemunda x IFFR

Event

Year round 2023

Weekly Friday-night film screenings will take place at Podium Islemunda, accompanied by a side-programme of interviews and performances, in collaboration with IFFR, Rotterdam Open Doek, 48 Hour Film Project Rotterdam and Film Platform Rotterdam. The programme, Cinema op Zuid, will turn the spotlight on Rotterdam and Rotterdam filmmakers.

On Friday 22 September, Mondig Zuid and So Loud the Sky Can Hear Us will return to the big screen following their world premieres during IFFR 2022. Filmmaker Lavinia Xausa and Mondig Zuid producer Nienke Korthof will join for a Q&A.

So Loud the Sky Can Hear Us explores the identity of a group of Feyenoord supporters. They unfold a hidden world of faith, love, compassion, and vulnerability. As filmmaker Lavinia Xausa attempts to trace back the 'lost voice of God' among the voices of the supporters, she wonders how the lost monophony of ancient chants may turn into a new polyphony.

Renee van Zundert’s Mondig Zuid is an affectionate documentary series about three teens growing up in Rotterdam-Zuid. Tania wants to be a spoken-word artist and is teased. Selena lives in a disrupted household and just wants everyone to get along. And Darlin is looking for a job, so he can earn money to support his sick mother.

Both films have English subtitles.

Cinema op Zuid is part of the Zomer op Zuid 2023 programme. From June to September, you can experience the cultural richness of Rotterdam Zuid in its many shapes and forms. With a programme featuring 60 different sized events, Zomer op Zuid reflects what the south of Rotterdam really is: powerful, idiosyncratic, surprising and unstoppable.
