IFFR KINO #30: Leones

Wednesday 1 April we will screen the visually astonishing and audibly overwhelming Leones (IFFR 2013), the feature film debut of Argentinean filmmaker and artist Jazmín López. A film you want to know as little about in advance as possible and that you just have to go through.

A woman in her early twenties walks along a winding path through a dark forest. The camera follows her very closely. On the soundtrack the cheerful twittering of birds and the rustling of the wind through the treetops compete for priority. “Sofi!?”, the girl shouts, as four shadows loom up in the distance. "Isa?!", is the answer. "Where are you?” There are five of them walking through the forest. Searching and groping. They're kissing, cheating on each other and trying to scare each other (“I see dead people!”). One of the boys is carrying a recording device, another a gun. Gradually their mutual relationships become clearer. And we find out exactly where the journey is going.

For this existentialist, mystical horror, Leones was filmed on 35mm and only used natural light. She developed the highly secure scenario at the Binger Institute, among others. 

Jazmín López studied film in Argentina and art in New York. Her work has been exhibited at the MoMA in New York, Centre George Pompidou in Paris and the KW Institute in Berlin. IFFR 2020 screened her second feature film Si yo fuera el invierno mismo in the Tiger Competition.
