D.W. Griffith

Between June 1908 and August 1913, D.W. GRIFFITH (1875-1948, USA) directed over 450 short films produced by the Biograph Company, one of the studios of the Motion Picture Patents Company (aka The Edison Trust). In 1913 Griffith left Biograph to make feature-length movies. Griffith's epic film on the American Civil War, The Birth of a Nation (1915) became one of the most profitable blockbusters in film history.
