Still: Paixões recorrentes
Ana Carolina TEIXEIRA SOARES (1949, Brazil) is a filmmaker and screenwriter. Her first documentary films in the 1970s mainly thematically focused on labour and unions. In 1974, she directed her first documentary feature, Getúlio Vargas, Dictator, which was very well received. She then changed course to write and direct feature films, her first being Mar de rosas/Bed of Roses (1978), a fierce satire on the bourgeois family seen through the eyes of a teenager. Her two films Das tripas coração/Hearts and Guts (1983) and Sonho de valsa/Lady in Shining Armour (1988) completed this feminist trilogy. She went on to direct the Ópera Ariadne auf Naxus by Strauss in the Municipal Theatre of Rio de Janeiro and the Ópera Salomé by Strauss in the Municipal Theatre of São Paulo. Ana Carolina returned to film with Amélia (1999), a film inspired by the French actor Sarah Bernhardt and her trip to Rio de Janeiro in 1906, winning the Best Film Award at the Biarritz Film Festival. Her film Paixões recorrentes/Endless Passions, world premiere at IFFR 2022, discusses the death of ideology and is set on the Brazilian coast during the day the Second World War was declared. Ana Carolina has been on the jury of several international film festivals, including the Venice Film Festival. She had a highly influential role as a filmmaker during the military dictatorship in Brazil, fighting censorship and paving the way for social and political commentary in films. Her films are often a reflection of power and its effects.
