The Day Is Over – Gerwin Tamsma

19 May 2021

For this special edition of Bright Future each IFFR programmer presents a fresh feature debut from the cutting edge of filmmaking.

I have not yet met Qi Rui, the director of The Day Is Over. But, having seen this first feature, I can perhaps make a few guesses about him. He is very determined and quite demanding − of himself, to be precise. He is too wise to be a perfectionist but likes to do things by himself. Trained as a cameraman, he also possesses a great ‘ear’ for nature, for tone of voice. A director capable of forgiving mankind’s flaws, but not accepting them.

I guess he didn’t pursue his ambition to direct immediately after finishing Beijing Film Academy, wanting to become more experienced, in work, in life. Until he was ready to make this film, that’s inescapably sad, but full of energy and life. Until he found the right form to share his understanding of the harsh rural realities, and of the young teenagers who hope to be heard, hope to escape, to be reconnected with their parents.

I look forward to the reality check on my guesses. I am sure that in the coming time, as The Day Is Over will find its audiences, touching the hearts and minds of people, that Qi Rui will grow ever more confident and productive. In that way, despite the brutal facts of life, the future is bright.
