'Film is indifferent material that can be superimposed in the projector. Distributed at the gate, emulsion trumps lamplight in a shadow on the aperture's frame shape. Up on the screen, a Punch and Judy show is acted out and emulsion is cudgelled into submission to the tune of optical sound synchronized in the mind of the audience.
