Princess

The form of an animation film is used to tell an adult and sometimes even extremely adult story. The young Danish director Morgenthaler has succeeded in providing his film with a very professional appearance, on a par with the Japanese you could say.
A priest named August (in his 30s) returns home one day after years of working abroad as a missionary. He returns to arrange the funeral of his sister, a porn star whose stage name was Princess. She was once a real star in her profession, but sexual abuse and drugs left her a physical wreck. Her five-year-old daughter Mia was being cared for by a friend, a prostitute. August takes the child away from the friend and decides to avenge the decline and death of his sister. He considers the porn bosses responsible for her death. When it gets through to him that little Mia has been abused too, divine wrath is awoken in the clergyman. The priest’s lonely crusade revives a strikingly detailed picture of the sex industry.
Some critics objected to the fact that the film turned against sex and violence on moral grounds while showing it in all its glory. The film maker is however conscious of this dilemma: in a certain sense it forms part of the theme of this film, which openly admits its moments of moral doubt. Against the rules of the genre, Morgenthaler also makes use of several live-action scenes that should help clarify the past of the protagonists. (GjZ)
