Among many other things, 2004 was also the year of the music DVD. Record shops adapted their displays and record sales cranked up. But even now, when the image is getting our attention as much as the music, the supply is still very much limited to pop promos, pop documentaries, etc. - very commercial views from behind the scenes. The moment has also come that DVD recorders are somewhat more affordable, and the alternative DVD circuits are starting to thrive, using only the Internet as a platform to present their merchandise. Now even small, totally obscure music labels or even individual bands and musicians can release their own DVDs. The logistics are often very low-tech, but the look is all the more spontaneous and adventurous. From kitchen sink experiments with sound and image to the most radical electronics, without even the faintest sense of complacency. A new audiovisual domain is waiting to be explored, where anything goes. This DVDrome selection (curated by Floris Vanhoof) indicates how hybrid the results of this new symbiosis between sound and image can be, devoid of all genre conventions. These discs were not made for the big screen, so we are showing them in a more appropriate setting.
