Yes Sir! Madame...

Most fake films parody familiar and conventional ways of making films. However in this film, Robert Morin and Lorraine Dufour spoof the more marginal genre of the autobiography compiled from home movies, a minor undercurrent in film-making Rotterdam dedicated a separate programme to in 1994. In this pastiche of the genre it is not the film-maker himself, but the fictional Earl Tremblay who reveals his life story and deeper emotions using home movies. Tremblay was supposedly brought up by a French-speaking father and an English-speaking mother; so he wrote his filmed diary, in which he wrestles with his identity, in two languages. So he speaks each sentence twice: once in his mother tongue and once in his 'father tongue', a procedure that gives a very special sound and rhythm to the soundtrack. A film that despite the fiction works as a diary. (GjZ)
