Watch Neighbouring Sounds for free

09 April 2020

For your isolation viewing. Free until 28 April.

As you spend many hours isolated at home, IFFR has you covered. Next to La Flor, we’ve made Neighbouring Sounds by Kleber Mendonça Filho available to watch online for free for now, across the Benelux until 28 April, on IFFR Unleashed.

Neighbouring Sounds is Mendonça Filho’s feature-film debut and had its world premiere in IFFR’s 2012 Tiger Competition. Meandering past the residents of a wealthy street in Recife, where private security guards ply their trade, this self-assured debut portrays the two sides of the Brazilian Dream. Filho scratches the varnish of a culture that revolves around paranoia, fear and revenge.

In an IFFR interview in 2012, Mendonça Filho talked about the making of the film and explained how its “thriller-like element became much stronger than anticipated.” Read the full interview here.

Mendonça Filho has visited Rotterdam three times, and the festival has shown most of his work. In 2007, IFFR dedicated a strand of its programme to the director’s short films and in 2020 we screened his latest feature Bacurau, which he directed alongside Juliano Dornelles.

Neighbouring Sounds was supported by IFFR’s Hubert Bals Fund in 2008 through script and project development,  and 2011 through post-production.
