Anyone who has caught the eye of an actor during a stage performance knows the brief yet intense intimate moment in which the distance between the performer and the spectator seems to disappear. That's also how this VR bridges distances: between star and human, actor and audience, real and virtual, memory and here and now.
This VR experience centres on the enormous Asteria, an opera star made of star material. She sings especially for you, and it wouldn’t be an opera without a tragic love story. You also visit Asteria's dressing room and you can wander around the universe looking for her. Die Fernweh Oper, with a libretto written by Belgian poet Maud Vanhauwaert and sung by Swiss opera talent Annina Gieré, is the fourth in the series 'Shoebox Dioramas': interactive illustrations made by Dutch artist Daniel Ernst. Each of the dioramas takes you to hand-painted environments full of weird and wonderful characters and surprising stories.
