sound//vision is IFFR’s innovative, experimental late-night programme, made up of four evenings and nights of live A/V performances in WORM.
Saturday evening will kick off with the audio-visual live performance Neutro by Italian artist Simone Sims Longo. It explores ‘insignificance’ using forms of sound that develop over time and space. The work has four parts with the artist utilising a different video technique for each one. The digital sounds are generated from repeated, layered sound samples also created using a variety of techniques. This results in an asynchronous, polyrhythmic audio-visual structure that changes in the space.
Iranian Raha Raissnia, who lives in the USA, will present the performance Mneme II, which consists of well over 30 hand-painted 16mm film strips in loops for two projectors, 12 hand-painted 35mm slides for a projector and a twice-painted screen that elicits an optical effect. Greek-American Panagiotis Mavridis seeks to merge sounds from his hand-made wind and stringed instruments with Raha’s images. Their second performance Galvanoscope also employs hand-painted 35mm slides, Super-8 film and the doubly painted screen, but now with an abandoned Indian mosque as its subject. An ode to architecture that represents echoes of the hopes and dreams of lost souls. These performances are part of the Deep Focus programme Blackout.
The final act on Sunday is Blockade, which combines the talents of Mexican activists Colectivo Los Ingrávidos, Belgian improv drummer Lander Gyselinck and Dutch electronic-jazz producer and musician Mitchel van Dinther (also known as Jameszoo) and was brought together specially for sound//vision. The Mexican collective plays with superfast montages of surreal shots full of colour as well as layered projections of colourful, slowly merging images and scorched film frames. Both forms are perfect for accompaniment by two musicians who have inventively enriched jazz with influences from contemporary electronic and experimental improvised music.
Made possible thanks to the support of Vlaams Cultuurhuis De Brakke Grond.
After the sound//vision performances, DJs from Rotterdam will take over for a scintillating dance night. DJ Duckfood plays old and new music from around the globe, irrespective of genre.
