sound//vision is IFFR’s innovative, experimental late-night programme, made up of four evenings and nights of live A/V performances in WORM.

In Decomposed Landscapes, Taiwanese filmmaker Lichun Tseng (NL resident) and South-Korean composer-sound artist Ji Youn Kang will undertake a journey of change, moments, time and space. As a member of Filmwerkplaats Rotterdam, Tseng is primarily known for her use of 16mm film. Kang bases a great deal of her music, written for Wave Field Synthesis, on Korean shamanism and in it she explores the relationship between music and physical space. With eight projectors and two looper boxes, Decomposed Landscapes seeks the alternation between light and darkness. The landscape reveals itself and disappears again through the growth and decay inherent in nature.

For this edition of sound//vision, Belgian guitarist Dirk Serries (Vidna Obmana, Fear Falls Burning) and Dutch sound artist Rutger Zuydervelt (also known as Machinefabriek) will collaborate with Dutch filmmaker and artist Joost Rekveld, who continues to wonder what humans can learn from the dialogue with machines. Suggestive soundscapes, tense in texture, tone and timing, will be combined with overwhelming live improvisations. Rekveld will use his meticulously designed computer processes to generate live images. In their performance #2623 they react to one another in pure sound and visual improvisation.

The concluding performance of this sound//vision, OVERVIEW, presents the ‘overview effect’ astronauts experience when they see the earth from space: a fragile ball in an immense, dark void. The effect leads to fundamental questions about life. French sound artist Annabelle Playe and French image artist Hugo Arcier will translate the overview into images and sound. Playe uses influences from electronica, electroacoustics, drones and noise. Arcier processes these using his reactive 3D audio screen. Some sounds disrupt the coloured surface, others generate colours that spread far and wide. During the performance, quiet and noisy, fragile and brutal sounds and images alternate.

Subsequently, DJ collective Het Kasteel (Michiel Klein, Leon van Barneveld and Frederic van de Velde) will take over the dance floor. They spin records everyone dreams of, but no one knew existed.
