Critically acclaimed and influential director, Haile Gerima is an independent filmmaker and professor of film at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Born and raised in Ethiopia, Gerima’s concern for people of African descent defines his oeuvre. The director will share his vision on the importance of independent cinematic expression as opposed to formulated conventions and stereotypes. He encourages oppressed voices to develop a visual and narrative language to express one’s personal and cultural sources and engage social change. Two of his iconographic films will screen in the PACT programme: Sankofa and Harvest 3000 Years. Part of IFFR’s PACT programme, in collaboration with the Dutch Directors Guild (DDG).
