The 22-year-old Nicole still lives with her parents, in a luxury villa with a swimming pool in a small community in Quebec. During a long, aimless, hot summer, she realises that her life cannot stay as it is. It seems everyone is overtaking her in all areas - even the ten-year-old that she babysits.
Director and screenwriter Stéphane Lafleur noticed that a lot of films are made about teenagers or thirty-somethings, but too few about the difficult, interim phase - a time when so much is still possible, but the contours of adult life start taking shape unsettlingly quickly.
Tu dors Nicole is a refreshing, dryly comical ode to the stumbling period of the early twenties. In stylish black-and-white and with exceptional comic timing, Lafleur captures an atmosphere of sleepless summer nights, growing unease and debilitating doubt. Wrestling with her rusty bicycle lock, yearning for Icelandic geysers, the bags under her eyes growing darker and darker, Nicole courageously finds her way.
