Demolition and construction, man and environment, a city in flux - Rotterdam Classics: Photography in Motion offers an exploration of pre-war and post-war Rotterdam through film photography, with live musical accompaniment by the Plastic Fantastic Timemachine. The film is a production by the Municipal Archive of Rotterdam in cooperation with the Netherlands Fotomuseum, the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision and EYE.
Over the years, there has always been great cross-fertilisation between photography and film in Rotterdam. From the 1920s in particular, photographers regularly picked up film cameras. Their films, often taking the city as their subject, present an unmistakeably photographic way of looking. This programme shows a selection of such ‘moving photographs’ from the crisis years (1920s and ’30s), juxtaposing them with images from the years of post-war reconstruction. This line is then extrapolated to today and a completely new, ‘illegal’, look at the city from a drone. Includes films from 1922 to the present by the likes of François van Dijk, Von Barsy, Schuitema, Koelinga, Schaper and Van Vuuren.
