Mousse (Isabelle Carré) and Louis (Melvil Poupaud) are young and in love. Their drug use, however, brings an abrupt end to their romance. When they accidentally take an overdose of heroin, Louis dies. Mousse wakes up from her coma and hears she is pregnant, by Louis. She flees Paris in order to come to terms with Louis's death in a small coastal town. Months later, Louis’s brother Paul knocks on her door. Her pregnancy also releases emotions in him .
After Sous le sable (2000) and Le temps qui reste (2005), Le refuge is the last part of Ozon's trilogy about death. The French director wanted to make a film about the sensual metamorphosis of a pregnant woman for years. Carré was really pregnant during shooting. The drama won the Special Jury Prize at the San Sebastian Film Festival.
