The desiccation of the Aral Sea as a result of disastrous Soviet planning has been a subject of several documentaries, most of which have approached the issue from a socio-political or economical point of view. Film makers Ismailova and Casas tell the story of the Aral Sea through the lives of three generations of fishermen and their struggle for survival. With the sea retracted, they have to cover great distances to catch fish - their sole food and source of income. Moving away is no option, for their roots are too deep. But they all hope that the Aral Sea will come back to them one day. An intimate portrait of this faraway place in Uzbekistan and its inhabitants, both untouched by the globalism of today. (LC)
