Adrian is thirty and goes to visit the family of his girlfriend Wanda, to ask for her hand. Wanda lives with her mother and her two sisters: Marta, who is married to Tadeusz, and Basia, the mother of the little Alicja. The bossy and bitter mother does not give Adrian permission to marry her daughter because of his tumultuous past (he had already been married and in addition he had been a drug addict). The presence of the fairly direct Adrian disrupts the fragile balance in the family. Marta has marriage problems and feels very attracted to Adrian. Basia, who doesn't want to admit who the father of her child is, has a severe attack of diabetes after a fierce quarrel with Adrian and dies. Sometime later, Wanda, Adrian, Marta and Tadeusz come back together. The conflicts soon flare up again and reach a dramatic climax. Barzyk presents the family drama in a direct way with many close-ups, as a result of which one cannot escape a certain feeling of claustrophobia. Barczyk: `Death and change are the only things in life that are certain. My life has changed, nothing is the way it was. I was terrified of it, but also tried to tame it. Taming the fear -that was the idea behind this film.'
